Your work diary can take over your life. Stop doing it! Put yourself first, open your diary and block out chunks of time in which you won’t work. This can be something as simple as going for a walk or scheduling time to have lunch with friends and family.

In order to really enjoy your work / life balance you need to set limits from the very beginning. “When I finish this urgent project I’ll have more time”. There will always be something urgent or important to take care of. Decide on a set time that you’ll leave the office and stick to it. Become a master of prioritising, work on your time management and try to stick to your rule.

  • Keep your devices clean

While having access to all of your work programs and emails on your mobile or your table is convenient, it can really weigh your ability to switch off. The world is moving so fast that we are almost expected to respond to emails when they come in at 3.00am. If you are guilty of this, your mind is constantly in work mode. Don’t turn your home into a workspace. It should be a place of solitude and your family deserves your attention. Try keeping your apps closed when you get home and maybe allowing yourself to look at them only twice a day on the weekends.

  • Find somebody to lean on

Be open and honest with your closest friends and family when it comes to your work / life balance. Ask them for their opinions. Tell them to let you know if they think you are acting differently due to stress. Having somebody outside of work giving you a fresh perspective can inspire you to make the changes you need to improve your professional and personal life.

  • Take a Holiday

The ultimate way to escape work is to get away. Not only are holidays an exciting way to see different parts of the world, but they also give you a chance to unplug from your work. Make it clear that you will not be answering work emails or calls while you’re gone, and do your best to not check in. This will help you refresh your batteries and actually help you mentally in the long run.

Keeping your team fresh is the best way to keep them working efficiently and shows that you care about them as people instead of just employees. Change in the workplace must start from the top.
